Rockhurst, St. Teresa’s win Tim Nixon Invite

LIBERTY — Two teams who are expected to compete for MSHSAA Class 5 state titles this fall won team championships Saturday at Capitol Federal Sports Complex.
On the boys side, Rockhurst cruised to an easy win at the Tim Nixon Invitational. The Hawklets scored 44 points, while runner-up Lee’s Summit (91) and Lee’s Summit West (93) rounded out the top three at the 15-team meet.
They were led by the reigning Class 5 state champion, junior Jack McGovern. He took over the lead during the second half of the 5K race, and eventually won by 21 seconds. His winning time was 14:56.5.
Two more Hawklets finished in the top 10 Saturday. Sophomore Charles Sullivan and junior Jack Morrison placed eighth and ninth, just breaking the 16-minute barrier. Juniori Abram Bland and sophomore Tyler Bell rounded out Rockhurst’s scoring runners, placing 14th and 16th, respectively.
Liberty North senior Nathaniel Haberlach led halfway through the race before finishing runner-up in a time of 15:17.7 – 19 seconds ahead of the next runner.
Lee’s Summit West senior Parker Williams and Liberty North junior Joseph DeRouchie also placed third and fourth, respectively.
Summit Christian junior Leo Butler, last year’s Class 3 third-place runner at state, rounded out the top five Saturday.
On the girls side, St. Teresa’s Academy won the team title. The Stars won with 62 points, while Blue Springs South (76) clipped Father Tolton Regional Catholic (78) for second place at the meet.
St. Teresa’s put two runners in the top 10 and four total in the top 15. Leading the way was senior Polly Fendler, who finished fifth in a time of 18:44. Junior Caroline Bowen was the next runner across the finish line, nine seconds behind her older teammate. Freshman Lola Esslinger and senior Emma Murray also placed 12th and 14th, respectively. Senior Emilia Egan rounded out the scoring with her 25th-place finish.
Blue Springs South’s fifth runner beat St. Teresa’s fifth runner, but the Jags just fell short in the team scores. Senior Bailey Baier led the Jaguars with a fourth-place finish.
Winning the 5K race was Liberty senior Lily Hurt. She ran neck and neck with Liberty North junior Lucy Wright for the majority of the race. Hurt clipped Wright by less than a second at the finish line, winning the race in a time of 17:49.5. Wright’s time was 17:50.3.
Liberty sophomore Tessa Purdue finished third Saturday. Fellow sophomore Silvia Caruso was the third Liberty runner to finish in the top 10, placing eighth overall.
